Decade Luck Cycles (Da Xian): How Zi Wei Dou Shu Tells Time

The problem timing solves

A natal chart is fixed at birth — yet nobody lives one uniform life. The same person has building years, harvest years, and years that mostly teach. Zi Wei Dou Shu's answer is not to redraw the chart but to move a frame across it: the fixed twelve palaces stay put, and a rolling ten-year window changes which of them is currently "in the driver's seat."

How decade cycles work

Starting from an age determined by your chart's configuration (commonly in the first decade of life), each palace in sequence hosts a ten-year cycle (大限, Da Xian). During a given decade:

1. That palace acts as the decade's Life Palace — its stars and condition color the whole period's temperament.
2. The entire ring re-labels around it: the cell after it becomes the decade's Siblings Palace, and so on, producing a full second chart layered on the natal one.
3. The decade's stem issues its own Four Transformations — a fresh Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji land on the board and hold their posts for ten years.

So at any moment you are reading two charts stacked: the natal layer (what you are) and the decade layer (what this chapter is doing with it). A natal Wealth Palace serving as this decade's Life Palace makes money questions the era's spine — even for someone who never cared before.

Why decades feel so different

The mechanism explains ordinary biographical experience with surprising economy. The "same person" changes chapter because the driving palace changes: a decade driven by a palace holding Qi Sha (the Marshal) runs on campaigns and decisive breaks; the next, driven by a Tian Tong cell, runs on ease and recovery. Neither contradicts the natal chart — they are different rooms of the same house being lived in.

The most-watched events are collisions between layers: a decade Lu landing on the natal Ji palace (an old knot finally lubricated), or a decade Ji landing on natal Lu (an easy domain suddenly demanding real attention). These crossings, more than any single star, are what classical readers mean by "your chart turns."

Annual and monthly layers

Inside each decade, every year applies the same logic at smaller scale: the year's branch marks which palace is the annual Life Palace, and the year's stem issues annual transformations. Months nest inside years the same way. The resolution cascades:

A question like "when does my career open?" is answered by tracking where incoming Lu lands across the next several years — and checking which decade frame those years sit inside. A good year inside a misaligned decade delivers a good month or two; the same year inside an aligned decade delivers a move.

Finding your current cycle

Any competent chart software prints the age ranges of each decade cycle around the ring (e.g., 24–33, 34–43). Find the range containing your age; that palace is your current driver. Then ask three questions:

1. What are this palace's stars and brightness — the chapter's temperament?
2. Where did this decade's four transformations land — the chapter's plot?
3. How many years remain — and what does the next driving palace look like?
